Abstract
The main objective of the present article is to analyze the reasons that led the Spanish Government in 2001 to take and implement the decision to allow foreign recruits into the Spanish armed forces. Its authors also examine the successive modifications that have been applied since then to the initial plan, and the impact that the entry of foreigners has had on Spain's all-volunteer force as a whole. The topic recommends itself as, with the exception of a handful of publications, it has hardly been researched to date, in Spain or elsewhere.

L'objectif principal du présent article est d'élucider les raisons qui ont conduit le gouvernement espagnol en 2001 à prendre et appliquer la décision d'autoriser le recrutement d'étrangers dans les armées. Les auteurs passent ensuite en revue les modifications apportées au projet initial depuis lors, et l'impact sur l'armée professionnelle espagnole de la présence d'étrangers dans ses rangs. Le sujet se recommande par la rareté, au-delà d'une poignée de publications, des recherches sur ce thème jusqu'à aujourd'hui, en Espagne ou ailleurs.
